The Key to Perfect Waffles Is a Properly-Heated Waffle Iron

Waffles are a most welcome breakfast, but they must be crispy to be worth your time (and mouth). To ensure you are serving and eating the crispest and tastiest of waffles, you have to properly pre-heat your waffle iron, and you can’t just rely on the indicator light.

According to Cook’s Illustrated, that light is a liar, as it only tells you when a certain spot on your iron is hot enough, and not that the whole thing is uniformly hot. For waffles that are crispy all over, CI recommends waiting ten to twenty minutes before ladling in your first batch of batter, and waiting one to two minutes in between waffles. This will ensure that everyone one of your waffles is perfectly browned and toasty, ready for drizzling with syrup or smothering with whipped cream.
