Cleaning is an unfortunate, though very necessary reality of being a grown-up, and I often have to play little mind games with myself to get it done. Beyond the fact that a clean environment is just more relaxing, I’ve found having cleaning products I love using to be the most powerful motivator.

It turns out I’m not the only one, and that various Epicurious editors use the same tactic to get the dishes done. For years, I refused to buy Mrs. Meyer’s dish washing soap, even though I loved the smell, because they were “too expensive.” But then, one fateful day, I decided to “treat myself” not only to the geranium-scented Mrs. Meyer’s
dish soap, but to the surface cleaner as well, and I’ll be damned if I didn’t enthusiastically clean my kitchen that evening. I’m not suggesting you all run out and buy this exact brand and scent of soap, but I am suggesting you buy products and tools you love, whether it’s a particularly good-smelling cleaner, or extremely effective soap scum remover. Beyond dish soap, there are a few other cleaning items that make me want (well, almost want) to clean my apartment: Swiffer Sweeper Dry Cloths : I don’t care if they’re expensive. I don’t care that they’re a little wasteful. They get the dog hair up off of my floors like nobody’s business, and make dusting a cinch. (I also use them to gently dust off vinyl.) Cute Animal-Shaped Dish Scrubbers: Do these fox scrubbers scrub better than a non-fox scrubber? Probably not, but it makes me smile while doing dishes (a very tough feat). Magic Erasers: Any brand will do hear. I love watching the marks disappear off my walls and cabinets, which means I actually clean my walls and cabinets.
